Some things to think about when reverse feeding step-down transformers:

Sync 180's are rated around 12.5 KVA.

Why not run the 180 at 240v? I missing something? Did the 180 really come in a 460 only configuration?
Edit- I looked it up- I guess they did! My fault!

Let me start by saying I am not a welder. I am a industrial electrician by trade now retired. I need to install a 460 volt single phase, 27 full load amp syncrowave 180 welder for a friend. He is using a reverse wired 2:1 240 to 460 transformer. Where the line voltage input would be 240 single phase two wire residential system. The standard formula used (NEC) and (Jeffersonelectric.com) sites recommend using the following formula to size the transformer: Load voltage (460) x amps rating (27) divided by 1000 = kva rating...12.42 kva I would ordinarily just recommend something in the range of the 12.5 or even a 15 KVA transformer, but he says others on some boards have used a 5kva which he already has sitting on the floor. Thank you for the replies..
