A member of my family asked if I wanted a miller dimension 652 from his work. He doesn't work at a welding shop he works at a warehouse I asked why they had the machine and he said he didn't really know but it was converted to a transformer and I would need a electrician to turn it back to a usable welding machine. The only thing I can think of is they converted the machine to single phase for what I don't know. I guess what I'm asking is it worth picking up? What needs to happen to turn it back to three phase? And how much is it going to cost? Thanks let me know what you think and info will help

yeah, i've seen some srh welders used for the transformer, theater lighting i think,,,. likely the same idea. and no, unless you need a boat anchor, don't bother with it.Comment

Before you pass up on this boat anchor as Cruizer mentioned, it might be a Electronic VF drive inverter that is able to run the machine off single phase.
Such a devise would be fairly easy to remove and the incoming power would run into it.
If it is a electronic phase converter big enough to run the 652 that would be worth good money to some one like me who needs a big phase converter.
The reason someone would do this to the machine is because they need a big welding machine and only have single phase power available.
If its what I said it might be, you could break even once you sold the VF drive inverter.
However, It also might be the boat anchor that cruiser said it was, detailed pictures would help someone like Cruizer to make the final determination.Comment

I don't think it was converted to single phase as that would be impossible. As I've said I've seen a few of the big machines turned into odd power supply's for big lighting supply's, and others to run thermal spray.. Can't be re engineered for welding again, well I suppose that's posible, but the units are missing stuff, like the actual weld boards , as other , non miller stuff is installed for regulation,
