Horse Stalls

I 'm trying to build something similar to these stalls. The first issue I'm hitting on the materials is getting the channel that the 2x6 boards will fit in, there is something called Horse stall Channel. I can not find a source locally though, my local steel distributor doesn't carry it.

I got a quote to take 14 gauge steel have it sheered and braked into the channel. The 4x10 sheet metal is $85, the labor for the work is $255 ($340 total) and will yield 90 feet of channel.

Another option is to take strips of 1 3/4 flat stock and weld 3 pieces to form the channel. I need to price the flat stock out, but assuming the material is cheaper and I don't mind the time welding, what do you think of this solution? I'm guessing I'll clamp the pieces to a piece of square tube as I weld to keep it in place, but these will be long pieces so I'm nervous how it will come out.

You don't say where you are located so it makes it hard for us to offer local sources. All of the local steel supply yards here in North Texas carry the formed channel for horse stalls. I called about some the other day for another kind of project and two bucks a foot sticks in mind.

Keep in mind your lumber is 1 5/8". That is also the O.D. of 1 1/4" pipe that you can buy in different weights. Fence company's carry it galvanized and as light as 16 gauge. You could use it and tack on some tabs to secure the lumber. It would provide strength and prevent cribbing.

I just saw some "94.5" U-Channel" for building horse stall walls. It's only 18 guage. It's $28 each. To buy your 90' would cost about $320, not including shipping, tax, etc. So, it looks like having the 14 gauge sheared and formed is not a bad price.

But, if you have plenty of time and patience, building your own might be cheaper. How about 1 3/4" angle and welding on a piece of flat to make the channel?? Less welding so less chance of warping, I guess.....

You will struggle with keeping the piece straight if you try to fab it yourself. Sounds like your better off getting the pieces sheared and bent. I've had to make custom c shapes out of three pieces of flat bar and it was very time consuming to keep it from warping and twisting.
