  • syncrowave 180 or 250?

income tax is coming and i'm in the market for a tig welder. i'm undecided on whether to get a syncrowave 180 or 250. i'll be using it mainly on thin aluminum and chromoly for making body panels and tube chassis. by thin aluminum i mean .040 to .063. both have the pulse option which is a plus. so which one is best for my needs. i already have a mm210 with the spool gun and i love it. i also have a hypertherm powermax 600 plasma cutter. the tig would just complete my welding needs. thanks.

    shane7207,

It sounds like 100 amps will fill all your needs and 200 would just be plain nice to have. Let me add some fuel to the fire. How do you like your Powermax 600? It is an inverter machine. Have you considered the Dynasty 200DX. It has it all: lightweight, portable, pulse functions, arc frequency control, 100-500 VAC 1 or 3 phase input power,AC/DC, and more power than you say you need by the job description.

The Syncrowaves are great machines, but if you don't need the extra amps the Sync 250 packs, then go for a Dynasty. With the D200DX and your HT Powermax 600 you are basically plant portable if the need arises.

    Food for thought

About a year and and a half ago I was in just about the same boat. I actually took delivery of a 180 started to set it up in my shop and had second thoughts. My dealer was great, they took it back and I picked up the 250 with the Tigrunner package and havn't looked back since. I added the Pulser and Sequencer modules and it's now fully loaded. It's a great welder. I also ended up getting the Hypertherm Powermax 600 a few month later. Now I'm in the market for a Mig to upgrade from my SP125 Plus Lincoln and have been going back and forth between the MM210 and the 251. Just today I decided to go with the 251 because it will not be at its upper limit when in spray mode.

If you can swing the bucks go for the 250. You will not regret it. Do understand that it is a much larger unit but you get much more capability. Excellent control at the lowest amp levels and when you need it, 250 amps at 40% duty cycle instead of 150. With the Tigrunner package it is just about complete. The only option you will probably want it the pulser. It's not too expensive and is very easy to install.

In my experience, no matter what you think your maximum needs are it always ends up that you wish you had just a little bit more. Not too much chance of that with the 250.

thanks for the input ralenr. i was swaying towards the 250 and my dealer told me i should get that one also. just wasnt sure if he just wanted me to buy the more expensive one for his benefit. thats definitely bigger than i need. but when people know you have it its hard to tell what they may need welded. thanks again.

Sounds like you have some tough choices!

Trying not to sound like I'm upselling you, The Dynasty 200 with Accy kit will be about the same money or a bit less than the 250 and the performance is better. It's killer on Aluminum Right HAWK!

I agree with you Andy, but some folks think otherwise. That's okay. Miller makes both kinds machines for both kinds people.

thanks for all the advice. i never really looked at the dynasty until it was mentioned on here. i never realized there was that much performance in such a small machine. after looking at it and seeing what it can do, i like it better. since space is also a factor in my garage. thanks again.
