    down here we call them chill rings. they are not really a must but they do help out alot on welding small diameter pipe. just pop it in tack it then break off the tabs and weld it up don't have to worry about burn through when your useing them.i used them years ago when building lift boats they wanted chill rings on all the hydraulic lines.once it's welded it's part of the pipe and isn't goin anyplace if you do it right that is.

    Backing Rings

    I am wondering what the proper application is for backing rings on tubing and or pipe. What are their pros or cons, only needed if it is a pipeline, etc. The reason I ask is because I have some 3.5 inch chords that are 20 feet long and I am wondering if I weld them together if backing is necessary.
