Its amazing how that works ain't it. Never fails. Truth be told most of the time they would get out cheaper if they went by the hour because giving a bid you must figure for the unexpected. If all goes as planned there's an extra days pay or more in your pocket that they wouldn't have had to pay hourly.

you got that right i always give myself a few extra hours just incase something goes wrong i think they just get that sticker shock when you tell them an hourly rate .i make radiator shrouds for freedom well srevices. a local fab shop give them a bid of 1500.00 a piece and i always give them a bid of 850.00 . the first one took me a day and a half because it was the first one the second two i built them in one 10 hour day by myself they also wanted a fan shroud to so i added 400.00 for the two shrouds they loved them and liked the price.they would have gotten off way cheaper if they would have just told me to make them and go the t&m rout. i'll take that 1250.00 a day anytime.

down here the prices are all over the place but i normally charge 65.00 an hour plus mileage. the thing is all my jobs are bid jobs when i tell them 65.00 an hour they freak and ask for a bid so i bid the job at 65.00 an hour and they say ok????

Today we had a tig stainless at $ 100.00 hr, Typically 1 man and a helper in the rig are $ 135.00 hr.
2 men and 2 trucks with one helper $ 215 hr.

We typically do better when we bid our jobs, closer to $ 100.00 to $ 110.00 hr if we hustle.

We get a little more per hr then most because we get more complicated and bigger jobs where we are rebuilding plants and you need to know a lot more than just how to weld.

Like Fushion King said, Your reputation is worth a little more money.

Rig up for tig aluminum and charge no less than $100 an hr.
Do it yourselfers can't compete with that generally speaking.
Then you will even work for other welding shops.
When you do a steel job you can still get the same rate.
You do have to build a reputation tho, no matter what you do.

$60.00 per hr. Is max. Area just doesn't pay any higher. At one time welders in high demand, those days are gone. No strip mines left, farmers do there own & only a few left, couple lumber yards and there struggling to stay open.
