What size wire for 220 circuit for Miller 211

8 AWG with a 40 amp breaker because the machine draws almost 30 amps.

The manual is confusing at best. Ignore the 14 and 30,,, with a wire 12 or better you can breaker this machine to 50A,,, but my tailor made circuit for one is 10/30.

I ran mine off of 75' 8 gage wire and a 40 amp breaker. I think the book called for a 50 amp breaker

My MM210 only calls for a 40 amp breaker.

I would run #6. That way when you upgrade you will have large enough wire. Price the difference between # 6 and 8

I don't believe #12 wire should be on a 50 amp breaker, and I don't think it's good for over 20 amp breaker but not sure.

I just wired mine with #8 as I will probably get get something bigger down the road.

Breaking the above mentioned rule, I did wire a 110 outlet onto one of the legs in the box so I don't have to run and additional ext. chord for the grinders.

It's muddy for sure on this BUT it is allowable under certain circumstances.
Even the Miller manual has 14g wire on a 30amp as minimum wiring if you follow the NEC art 630 guidelines.

As Sberry mentioned the manual causes lots of confusion- that's why he stated 10g 30amp is a really good fit. Doesn't break the bank on wire costs and easy to work with.

It would be difficult to immagine an inspector giving his approval to a 30 amp circuit using 14 gauge wire. Generally a circuit using 14 gauge wire is limited to 15 amps, and 12 gauge wire for 20 amp circuits, 10 for 30, and so on. Remember, the breaker is there to protect the wire, not the end user. Never skimp on wire, it is false economy. Besides, no one really likes the smell of their shop burning to the ground.

Check out the site below and it should answer your questions. I used 8 gauge 3 wire and it was 65 feet long. I have never had a problem with it and have had it for almost 2 years (blog post came much later of course. )

Input voltage 230
Input amps @ rated output 46
Max recommended fuse in amps. time delay 50 amps
normal operating 60 amps
I don't where a circuit breaker fits in here, but my guess is 50 amps.

Min Conductor size AWG 8ga.
Max conductor length 127 ft.
Min ground size AWG 10ga.

That said I have two store-bought extention cords both have Nema 6-50 ends,
one is 2-8/1-10 and the other is 3/8.

In the end I like the idea of 6ga. from a 50 amp breaker. Room to grow.
