  • anvil buildup

I had a friend of mine ask me if I could build up the edge of his anvil. Over the years of use the once square edge on the face has rounded off. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what the best choice of rod would be. I'm not sure if I should use a tool steel rod or which type of hard facing would be best. I would appreciate any advice or input

Different anvils are made with different materials, and in different ways. Find out what brand and repost.

good info bob, here is a little fyi, ni rod is sold for cast and carries a pricey tag, but if you are looking to save a few bucks and still get top quality, try 312 ss rod, it is basically the same as ni rod only dif is that there is less filler in the 312ss flux

Does your friend know what he's doing? Reason I ask is, anvils are SUPPOSED to have a rounded off edge on one side for drawing out the metal.

It's not hard to screw up an anvil pretty bad by welding or grinding on it before you know what you're doing and why...

Yes he knows what he's doing. He is a horseshoer and if you are trying to draw out a clip on a shoe most guys like a square edge so that the inside clip/shoe surface is nice and square and flat so that you get a good fit on the hoof
