dual shielded flux core wire
Depending on the wire, perpendicular to a slight drag angle works best. Pushing you run a risk of slag getting in front of the weld pool.
Going vertical up, gravity keeps the slag back where it belongs.
Pushing you increase the risk of slag inclusion and some possible expensive re-work. I am not willing to risk a repair just to push.Last edited by benweldingawhile; 03-13-2014, 04:22 PM.

I'm a veteran welder 31 years of experience and have welded everything under the sun,
However, I just started running dual shield wire about 6 months on one of my machines and I honestly don't know, Everything I have done with the dual shield has been pushed, just as I do with hard wire.
( Sometimes you can teach an old dog new Tricks ) Keep in mind, I'm only 47 so I've got another 20 plus years in front of me.
I could retire soon if I didn't have an addiction problem.
( I cant resist buying tools ) There's always that ( If I just had this one last tool I'd be all set)
And then I get the 2014 Miller Catalog and I'm dreaming again.

I just finished up certifying in dual shield for all positions (1F, 3F, 4F) at school. I took two separate tests, one for 3F and one for 4F. The 4F test covers all positions, but I did two tests anyways. I passed both tests on my first try. I used a slight drag angle (maybe 5 degrees at MOST) on overhead, and perpendicular on my uphill. These were all multi-pass tests with a root pass and two covers.
The guys who kept failing were pushing their bead. The destructive tests clearly showed inclusions in their failures.
