I have a 14-50p to 6-50R that I made a while back. I have to plug into a dryer outlet that is a 14-30R. In terms of welding I don't need the neutral wire for a single phase 230vac powered machine with a 6-50p end. So what about just chopping off the neutral pin of the plug and then I can plug it into both types of receptacles? The 14-50 cord has 8 gauge wire in it so it can handle the full power.

That would like my 14 series plug with the ground and the 2-hots and then the L-shaped (30 amp) or straight blade (50 amp) neutral post off the plug. Does that make sense?
