Helmet / shield bag

I just bought a Speedglas 9000X welding helmet, and I'd rather not let it get beaten up in the shop. Who has a decent welding helmet bag at a resonable cost ?

You may want to take a look a some of the safety supply companies for motorsports. They have bags for racing helmets which should work good for your welding helmet. Companies like Simpson, Impact, Bell, etc.

How do you like that helmet? I keep thinking I should buy one of those automatic darkening helmets but the price keeps scaring me off! Don't really do enough welding to justify one at this time, but my old huntsman is about due for replacement.

I've been happy with my Kemper electronic hood (model 650), but would go with the Speedglass 9000 or Optrel Satellite if I had it to do over. The e hoods are nice for low light, tight spaces, tack welding, and are just plain convenient. I know mine has probably prevented many an accidental arc flash in cramped spaces. Now the down side. They will just plain spoil you. I carry an old Jackson with a flip up lens (#10 gold) as a back up hood. I use it when welding case pipe in trenches. The odd lighting angles really screw with my Kemper e hood. From what I have heard and read newest helmets have addressed issues of sensitivity, accidental failure, optical cheaters, solar over battery power, etc. It's hard to beat on old Hunstman.

The 9000X has a sensitivity adjustment when in the TIG mode. This hood is dynamite. I'd rather take a butt kicking than give this hood up and go back to a fixed shade.

Auto darkening Hood

I have recently learned to weld, but I started out with a Speedglas 9000v hood. For MIG welding I think these things might be a little overkill. However the fact that I could watch the arc start without burning my eyes speeded up learning to stick weld by a factor of 10. I am still not the best welder in the world, but I am 10 times better than I would have been without it. For TIG or Stick I would strongly recommend one of these things. They are worth the money, especially for beginners.

Capt, I bought the Optrel Satellite and I like it a lot. I have the Miller bag, but the Tillman bag is a little more durable. Neither will protect it as much as the racing helmet bag. I was wondering which bag you had gotten.

Speedglass 9000 or Optrel Satellite: Never having used a auto dark helmet before, which one of these would be best? They seem to be about the same price on the 'net. I like the bigger window option on the speedglass 9000X but that's not a necessity if the Optrel is substantially better. All my welding is done with TIG (Dialarc HF), steel and aluminum. I use a lighter shade because I have a hard time seeing what I'm doing with a darker shade. I'm also at that reading glasses stage so I have been considering those magnifying lens. Thanks for your guidance.

Doc, they are both good helmets. I went with the Optrel because I needed the cheater lenses also. I'm not sure if the Speedglas has a "slip in" cheater lens but I know that the Optrel does. Also, I was TOLD that some of the Speedglas models are not recommended for overhead welding. Maybe others would have more information on the Speedglas. The Optrel has a range of 5-13 and I use it for everyting - tig, stick and mig. It works well, but I still find myself flipping it up at the end of a weld..
