Can I Practice Tig With RG45 Rod?

Found an old tube of copper coated steel rod. I think this was purchased for oxy-acetylene welding. Haven't tried it yet but can't see why not since I just want to use it for practice.

    Weldit Part Number 70141
Labeled as: 3/32 steel rod, RG45

Y'all think it can it be used for Tig practice?

Probably Ok for practice but it is a GAS rod (not optimal)... the guys on WW go into it...

Jeffus' Welding Principles book has the answer also.

Can use RG45 for TIG practice running beads but not for production work as this filler rod has no deoxidizers

          Tried this out last night.

It does work and will make just as nice a bead. Don't know about structural strength but I wouldn't use it for that anyway.

          Great for practice though.

One note: Keep a short arc. If the arc lengthens sparks will start flying out of the puddle. I haven't seen this happen with ER70S6 but it will with RG45. :-)
