  • Is this safe?

I have never seen an electrode held like this (27-33 sec of the video). Is this safe to do?

Yup just tough on gloves. It keeps the rod from wobbling around giving more control...Bob

That's how I've held them for as long as I have been welding. Way more control

Yep I'd say its safe. I hold them like that sometimes, especially when its a new rod and you want to really control that long rod. Never had any problems with it but you don't want to be wearing gloves with holes in them.

Only way to stabilize 1/16" rods for me. Releasing it from the support fingers when it's short (and too hot) without flubbing the weld has been the real challenge.

The video shows professional pipe weldors using the technique, and I've even seen pictures of underwater weldors using it FWIW. Proper, intact protective gear is a key element to safely deploying it.

Gotta get one of those boom-mounted PipeWorx welding stations ***drool*** after my Bentley is out of the shop.
