  • 3035 Spool Gun

I have been experiencing problems with contact tip desintegration immediately upon pulling the trigger on my 3035 spool gun, whenever we set the MM210 at its max setting of 7 (aluminum with .035 wire). Variations in wire speed does not help one bit. We can go all day on the #6 setting without a problem, but as soon as we go up to 7, "ZAP" there goes another tip. The mig gun on mild steel performs just fine at this setting. Still using the original tip there. But I've gone through over 10 tips in the past 2 weeks on the spool gun, mainly whenever we try it at 7.

Are these tips limited in output power? If so, is there another tip available that can take the machine at max?

Moe, I can't help you with your problem, but I was wondering what part of Louisiana are you in? I'm half way between N.O. and Baton Rouge. Just curious....

Email if it's better for you....

HI MOE...........I'm not sure what the problem is........ Amperage restrictions.......No........Perhaps it is gas pressure related not enough cooling at this amperage.......Suggestion is up you gas to 30-35 psi.....Repeat processs.........Next suggestion is go to next sized tip up in diameter........As the copper tip heats up it expands on the outside but restricts on the inside...........

Next idea would to install the 3045 front end parts onto the 3035 spool gun. These are heavier duty parts and Tip Life may be extended. Please let us know how this works out...........Rock..........

            I am under the impression....

that the 3045 parts will not interchange with the 3035. If I can do this, then I will definitely try it.......

MOE........ The parts are not interchangeable,.....However the 3045 front end parts from tube out will work.........Your changeing the tube forward........Gun Barrel...........Rock.........

                Moe

Which series of aluminum wire are you using? 5356 has a quicker burn off rate then 4043. So, the 5356 requires a higher wire speed setting then the 4043. So, if you are trying to run 5356 at wire speed settings recommended for 4043 the wire will more than likely burn back to the contact tip.

I am using 5356 wire. This is for marine aluminum...

Sounds like too much voltage to me...are you going to tap 7 because of material thickness and the wire isn't wetting out on tap 6??

Andy... Exactly the case.. 1/2" Alum plate to sch 80 pipe for padeyes.

We worked around the problem by spending more time in the prep work and beveling the plate, then making multiple passes at a lower votlage with the same speed on the wire feed (Tap 6 setting and 82 speed). Fusion improved greatly and the welds are cleaner.

I do plan to try some 4043 wire soon, Even though my dealer recommended 5356 wire for marine applications, I'm not welding boat seams together, just deck and frame rigging.

I would have to agree that the 3035 is just too small to run that thick of material. I would even step up to the Spoolmatic 30A if you plan to do this type of work often. The 30A is much more durable at those higher settings.

                          Andy,

According to the specifications listed at the address below, the 3545, 15A and 30A spoolguns are not recommended for use with the MM 210 welder.

                          1. Can you explain why these spoolguns are not recommended? and

                          2. If I was to look at buying a 30A spoolgun to use on my machine, what would be required to hook it up? (the 3035 is a direct hookup).......

                          Thanks, moe

                            That's correct Moe.
Because of duty cycle concerns, the 15A and 30A are recommended for the MM251.
If you wanted to fudge it, you would need the Spoolmatic, a WC24 control box and a PSA-2 adapter. The adapter would have to rewired slightly for this to work.

                              3035 spoolgun

ANDY, IM CONFUSED ALITTLE HERE,ARE WE TALKING ABOUT RUNNING A MM210 WITH A 3035 SPOOLGUN ON #7 TAP W/5356 .30 ALUM AND ITS COOKING TIPS? I USE MY MM210 WITH THIS SET UP WITH OUT BURNING TIPS. I THOUGHT MAYBE I WAS RUNNING SOMETHING DIFFERENT SO I WAS TALKING WITH HAWK ON THE PHONE AND WENT TO THE GARAGE AND DOUBLE CHECKED IT AND THATS WHAT I'M RUNNING WITH THE EXCEPT I'M RUNNING ABOUT 84 OR 86 ON WIRE FEED SPEED. I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT MOE FINDS IS WRONG. I HAD TROUBLE RUNNING A DIFFERENT WIRE ONCE AND FOUND MY TIPS WERN'T TIGHT AND MY MILLER SUPPLIER SAID HE THOUGHT POSSIBLY IT WAS ARCING IN THE THREADS INSTEAD OF THE TIP. NEW TIPS CLEANED AND TIGHTED AND NO MORE PROBLEM. I KIND OF THINK THIS IS THE HIGH END OF OUR USEAGE FOR OUR MACHINES TOO. HOPE THERES A ANSWER. PISTOL8 sorry guys had to edit this it's .030 5356. this is futher proof the finger is quicker than the eye. sorry pistol8
