They will all work fine. The reason to use the 80sd-2 over the 70s2 is that the tinsile strenght of the 80sd-2 rod comes closer to matching the strength of the 4130 than the 70s2. They both have pleanty of ductility that is needed. Also, using the mild steel rod instead of the 4130 rod keeps you from having to heat treat the joint. I dont think that you would ever know the difference between the two mild steel rods because in all of the destructive tests that I have performed, the weld never broke, it was the 4130 tube that failed first.

    Rod choice 4130

Hello everyone. Like most of us who seek advice on a particular subject, I've received answers of ER80-sd-2, ER70S-2, and ER70S-6 as answers to the question of which rod to use on 4130 tubing. I've always machine prepped and thoroughly cleaned the weld area (inside the pipe as well, especially on .028), and I've also made a practice of stripping and cleaning the rod. My question is....in the expert opinions of those who visit this page, WHY should I use any one of these selections? I mean to say, WHAT about any of these selections would qualify it above the others in this application? As far as "normalization" or heat treating, the only heat this chassis will see is a 350 degree powder coating process. Thanks for wading through....J Berto
