  • What Welder for the job

I am looking for a mig welder for welding in an automotive frame shop mostly all light gauge welding. I was thinking about the Millermatic 210 what do you think. And also which welds the best flux core or just wire.

    Thanks Greg

      Thanks Greg
Flux core has the advantage of deeper penetration per welding amperage available. You can also use flux cored wire when shielding gas is not available or atmospheric conditions blow away your shielding gas. However, you do have the slag to clean. Plain wire is great for most applications. I have welded everything from 16 guage sheet metal to 1" plate with plain .035 wire ER70S-6. The process does vary from simple short arc through 1/4" and 3/8" material to globular transfer and spray arc for thicker material. Also thicker material requires multiple passes for tie ins and caps. Don't forget about joint preperation to insure penetration on the bigger stuff. The MM210 or MM251 should serve your needs well with .035 plain wire.
If you intend to spray arc or push for globular transfer for the thicker stuff, the MM251 is a better choice. There is an E71T-1 dual shield flux core that uses CO2 or C25 for the additional shielding gas. It provides superior penetration in all positions. I use it primarily on 1"+ where 100 penetration is critical.

Condensed: You should be in great shape with .035 plain wire and 75Argon/25CO2. When doing quarter panels and thin stuff you should drop down to .023 plain wire with same shielding gas.

Good luck and have lots of fun. Migs are great machines-especially for you application.
