Spectrum 187 Plasma Cutter

I have the oppourtunity to purchase one of these for $375 (used but in excellent condition). I assume this is an older model, but I'd like some information as to its age specs and capabilities.

The spec 187 came in 2 models. 187 and 187D. The unit was only good for about 1/16 material and had a torch made in Japan. The 187D was also made in Japan so parts will be expensive and they are a pain to repair. It was used mostly in the autobody business. If I had my choice, I would prefer a newer model.

Hi..I have a spectrum 187D plasma cutter I want to sell. Serial #JK637594.
Stock #903139. It seems to be in good shape. If you could give me an idea of what it is worth I would greatly appreciate it. Hello new here Machanic not electronics expert bought 625 spectrum.ice40c back in 2007 is h ser no LH420207P anyway been good ole gal other day cutting away 1/8 plate got yrd or two in was losing cutting powers low death then quite loud po p shut down fan ran as usual when lookin for pop might be somthing else breaker an such turned bk on fan clicks sounds good no arc air everything else. But no arc dead 1 st time taking apart yes 1st so anyway the here we go the 227 4 mofsets bipolar retifiers thing well one had like carbon burst trail coming out of its side its vs ga 10060up the other s1223p they kthey look the same 3/4inch wrench looks like 19 mill but there notnot made anymore can u sagest replacment are they mosfets igbts

Any body have any help as to where to proceed help line got very vague answer of there are other units you could do that but be careful why the cloke an dagger stuff looking to get my machine back to workin order not throw it in scrapyard ???????

If you're just planning to replace the IGBT modules, you will likely just blow the new modules. I haven't worked on one of those in a few years, but the module numbers you listed don't ring any bells.
You still had fan, lights, and air solenoid after hearing the loud pop? It could just be your pilot IGBT (the front module).
It sounds like you already removed the heat sinks. From the back of the machine to the front there should be 4 modules (back to front)
Input rectifier- you should still be able to find that model on eBay. I found that module for about $50.
Low side chopper - this is for your PFC. I found this model on eBay too.
Half-bridge inverter - same Pilot IGBT - didn't have to replace this, so I don't know if you can find it on eBay.

Vishay made those components for a little while, and you should be able to find them.

But, having been down that road for that same model (Miller CST 280s are in the same boat), I wouldn't recommend trying to fix it. More than likely the gate drive circuit for the blown IGBT is also bad. Once you put in the new one and power it up, there is a good chance the driver will turn the IGBT on and stay on, until it pops again. Those modules were tough to mount too.

well ended up in Hong kong they arrived in Los Angeles today mon the 7 might be here fri changing both thought why not everything else on board looks brand new the 1 i think blew was from the back of machine the first igbt but I got both still don't know what a bipolar rectifier or yeah the other on I hate the leap of faith stuff ha ha it might might not still work anyway. There are newer modules out there if this not goo lf anything what might be alternatives for vsga100na60up and s1223pif possible thank you for a reply nobody out there wants to help thank you

Can you post pictures of your machine and the bad components? The one you're trying to fix sounds very different to the Spectrum 625s I have seen. The one in the back, S1223P, should be your rectifier. There are a lot of reasons why this one could go. If that is the one that blew, I am surprised it didn't blow the panel breaker. Is the big capacitor puffy-look like it leaked gas, or even oozed out some fluid on the board? If the IGBT (GA100NA60), it is worth testing the protection diodes on the board - they should be a pair of gray diodes right by one of the screw terminals near that IGBT. You can either check resistance across each or use your diode tester on your multimeter. 0 resistance or 0 volt diode drop tells you to check more things.
