  • Millermatic 140 bead 'Pulses"

I have a fairly new Millermatic 140, on my second 11# roll of wire, using gas. It has worked great till today. When trying to run a bead today, the arc "pulses" on and off 2 or 3 times a second. Makes a pretty bead with 0 penetration. I have cleaned the connections where one reverses polarity, cleaned the drive wheels, cleaned everything on the end of the gun, replaced the tip, cleaned the ground clamp and connection, and cleaned the work piece. It is on a 20 amp 110 circuit that worked fine for the last roll of wire. Just for fun I dropped the voltage setting on the unit and there is still the same "pulse" when running a bead. Any suggestions?

Wire is too big for the 140- check yer manual.

.023 and .030 for Solid Wire

You are right! I just plugged in what they sold me. It will run .035 flux core, so do you recon .035 with gas will hurt it?

can't say iffin' it will hurt the machine but as you have noticed it doesn't work- just not enough power to burn off the .035 solid wire.

I don't even like .035 solid in my MM185 and its a lot bigger welder, just no sweet spot...Bob

Agreed, I run only .030 and .023 in my mm180.

I cleaned the switch, and replaced the wire with .030, just like old times, runs like a champ.
