  • The right settings for Miller 300 Amp TIG Gold Star

    Q. I HAVE A MILLER 300 AMP TIG GOLD STAR. WHAT ARE THE RIGHT SETTINGS FOR THE START CONTROL, HIGH FREQUENCY, AND FLOW METER, WHEN WELDING AC FOR ALUMINUM, AND DC STRAIGHT FOR MILD STEEL? MOST OF WHAT I WELD IS 1/8", 1/4" - THANKS. (Submitted by: Jon Olson from ELEVA,WI)

    A. That machine will like to run a 3/32" pure tungsten on 1/8" Aluminum, and a 1/8" pure tungsten on the 1/4" Aluminum, a 3/32" 2%Thoriated tungsten on your 1/8" steel and a 1/8" 2% Thoriated on 1/4" steel. Gas rates should be around 15 to 22 C.F.H. On steel your high frequency will be on start only, and on Aluminum it will be on Continuous. Your start control will be an operator preference. Some people like a hotter start than what they actually weld at, others like a low and slow start. Try it half way and go from there. Thanks again and good luck.
