  • Aluminium Frame and Roll Bar

    Q. I currently have a Millermatic 150. I race a Lotus super seven replica in regional road racing. I try to fabricate most of my parts. I'm trying to build another frame and roll bar out of aluminium. Is my machine capable of switchimg over to aluminium, and what adapters do I need? Also is it safe and ok to use aluminium? (Submitted by: Robert Magro from Ontario, Canada)

    A. Your Millermatic 150 does have the capability to do Aluminum with one of our spoolgun adapters, but it may be too small for the work you need it to do. To do this out of Aluminum, you will need to go to a heavier wall thickness for frame pieces. Your machine will run out of amperage. A Miller Vintage with Spoolgun or better yet a Syncrowave TIG unit would be the best way. I personally would not sit in an aluminum car that was MIG welded. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm saying it is much better to TIG this project so you know it's strong and right. MIG is OK for Aluminum production type work, not for the specific, fine job you are looking for.
