Q. I have taken several TIG courses and am looking for the best value in a TIG machine that will handle NASCAR-modified type stock car tube frame fabrication, mild steel, max thickness .125. Are one of the smaller inverter welders practical? Should I use straight Argon with this setup? What filler do you recommend? (Submitted by: Cody from unknown)

A. The two best machines I could recommend are the Maxstar 200 which is an inverter unit, or if you also need to be able to weld aluminum, the Syncrowave 180SD is a great economical choice. I currently have some of the Maxstars at Hendricks Racing for doing exactly what you want to do. They are excellent DC type TIG units. I would use 100% Argon and an ER70S-2 or S-6 filler for the mild steel and an ER80S-D2 for the 4130.
