  • Is it possible to weld a competitive racing frame without using a jig?

    Q. I just finished welding a fun kart frame with a friend and I wanted to make a racing frame. Would it be possible to weld a competitive racing frame together without using a jig? If so, how? (Submitted by: Jeff Yannetta from Unknown)

    A. You could do this without a jig, but keep in mind that the cage is just that - a cage. The suspension is what has to be square and in perfect alignment with all four corners. The suspension has to work together, the chassis just holds the cargo and suspension together as one. Getting the suspension geometry correct will be your problem. Because this is a small chassis, you might try to find an old piece of 1-inch scrap plate from a mill or fab shop. I'm sure you could get it for next to nothing. Drill some holes and tap them for your fixtures.
    Good luck. Have fun.
