What are the advantages of gas shielded flux core? I imagine you want any protection you can get, but what is different about it?

The big advantage of gas shielded FCAW is that a large number of welders can qualify with it. It's one of the easiest process' to run. That means a larger pool of available welders, at lower labor rates.
Self shielded FCAW, once you get out of 211 land and into the voltage sensitive wires required in most structural apps, requires quite a bit more welding skill. That narrows the available pool of qualified welders and increases labor cost considerably.
SS FCAW is about all you'll find in outdoor structural steel code work. Inside GS FCAW will be more common in most applications.

Not for simple, easy to do work.
The road to higher wages is work in hard to fill fields.
The bigger problem in my opinion are the "I only buy the cheapest chineese crap" people of wally. Wages will adjust.
