Q. I build desert racing machines for my friends and myself. I see other companies punching holes in pieces of sheet metal (dimple dies) and then welding it to the truck for weight and appearance reasons. What is the formula for cutting holes in a piece of metal and still obtaining its strength and durability? I've seen people doing it without understanding it. (Submitted by: Brian from Unknown)

A. There are many types of punching dies available to get the appearance or function you are looking for. Check out www.irvansmith.com for some of the punches or other metalworking tools you might be looking for. They are a great resource for fabricators like us. Their number is 1-800-221-7223. and good luck in the sand!
