  • AC wavelength adjustments

I just got a dyn 350 and had a couple questions regarding the AC wavelength adjustments.

First of all why does the machine give a different setting for EN and EP? the manual states that i get a tighter arc if i give a 1.5:1 ratio as opposed to 1:1. Why can't i get a tighter arc by increasing the AC frequency?

Second question how do i know what freq to set in AC mode? The higher the frequency the tighter the arc. For real tight joints should i not increase frequency as high as possible? a 60hz for joints that have great gaps. Am i correct on this?

Third question is what is soft arc, square arc triangle arc? How do i decide which one i want? i dont see any buttons for this, how do i adjust it?

    Your input is appreciated.

    >First of all why does the machine give a different setting for EN and EP?
First off reading the manual will answer some of your questions, setting EN and EP independently will allow you to adjust penetration (or not) in a way that's just not possible with other machines. Remember the "balance" control on a syncrowave? That is a very basic control of the AC arc, the Dynasty is an order of magnitude more advanced. No matter how much you read, experimenting will ultimately teach you what is possible. One basic fact you may already know, more EN will increase penetration.

    >Why can't i get a tighter arc by increasing the AC frequency?
You can, but when used with adjusting the EN and EP you get a wider range of control. For example if I want more penetration I can increase the arc freq, but along with that, I would NOT increase the EP amperage, that would offset the benefit of the higher freq. Learn how the different adjustments can work together.

    >Second question how do i know what freq to set in AC mode?
It's not like there is only one specific freq. that is RIGHT for a given weld. Depending on your other settings, adjust the freq. until YOU have a weld that your satisfied with.

    >Third question... i don't see any buttons for this, how do i adjust it?
The manual really falls on it's face here, I believe on page 71 it proceeds to not explain which buttons to use to change the AC wave. And now that I am home I only remember that it is two buttons that need to be pressed.

you might find a lot of your answers if you were to read the entries in the sticky thread "Dynasty Process Setup".... that is why it is there...

Jody from Welding Tips and Tricks has some pretty decent videos that visually illustrate what the differences are and why... (about 6 videos)he does it with a chinee box but the principles are the same with a Dynasty

http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.comPart 1 of several Videos explaining Tig Inverter Settings...There is A/C balance, ac frequency, pulse, upslope, downslope,...

the owners manual just covers on the BASIC concept. I was looking for a lot more details.

But thread started by miller was very helpful. Still reading through it. thx
