  • 76 miller aead 200le caught fire at output

Hey, I have an old, plug selector style 200le, runs great, tried some old 7018 a while back, it had been out forever so it wouldn't run much of a bead. I put it away for a year, now after gettin it running, the cable from the output number selector caught fire after about two minutes of running. It started inside at the connection on the red fiberglass insulator riveted to an aluminum hoop right behind the face cover on top. I have a parts machine, but the manual on millers site is only for newer models. Can someone tell me why this would happen? It ran for a couple hours last fall without a hitch, all outputs fine, no smoke or smells. The leads weren't even hooked up, I was just checking carb setting? Thanks,Stacey from Montana

One of the outputs, weld stator, or coil is or was touching the frame. When the other output touched the frame, it sparked away kinda like a dead short. After that fire tends to occur.

Your not the first one this has happened to.

Here is a link to the manual link site... if you plug in the serial number to your machine it should give you the earlier version PDF to match your machine... Without the serial number it will automatically default to the newest version manual.. (which it sounds like you already found)
        Hope this helps

His machine is too old for this search.
The info below is from the Miller search site.

This search is for serial numbers beginning with LA and newer (LA, LB, LC...)
            (Production years 2000 and later)

Use the Search By Model Name option and also use your serial number. That should work better.

still no manual, oh well, its gotta be fixed either way

Thanks for the ideas, but no luck yet. I looked at every visible part on the welder for any other burns, bare wires, etc, but can't find anything? All wires look good, aside from the cable that plugs into the numbered holes on face. It looks to have started at the rectifier(guessing that's what it is because of similarities to parts diagram in manual I downloaded). It's burned thru the red fiberglass insulator on top.None of the plugs were dangling, it was plugged in at hi range on the range selector, and the middle on the number range. It's only burned near the rectifier though. I'm stumped, I don't know where to check with multimeter for a short?

Going to have to shoot us some pics before I can tell you whats going on, and your going to have to get yourself a diode tester. May be that function on your meter if its half decent.
