Anti spatter

Sitting here trying to watch a football game I care absolutely nothing about. I have a large welding table that I fabricate gates on and am wondering if there is a cheaper solution to anti spatter spray to keep the table clean of spatter. I typically clamp everything up then spray the areas where welding is going to happen. Just curious if there is some kind of cheap wipe-on or spray on available. Thanks for your time.

I like the tip/nozzle dip that looks like wax. Put it on with a small paint brush and it stays put for along time...Bob

There is a water soluble spatter spray that comes in 5 gallon buckets and you can get a trigger sprayer bottle at your local home improvement store for about a buck. I think I paid under 100.00 for a 5 gal bucket of the stuff and will last a long time.

I had some problems with the water soluable stuff as it was rusting all of my parts esp in the summer when it was real humid out. My train bridges have way too many small parts to wipe off after welding...Bob

Here is the real problem. Watching a football game that you don't care about. How is that possible?????? Us up here in the cold state of Wisconsin aren't thinking about welding and anti splatter except anti splatter on the field.

I use the kitchen anti stick spray what ever is the cheapest at the store. Arcet sells the stuff to it is about $3.70 a can.

I agree with you on trying to wipe all of that stuff off those train bridges. Those look very nice. I normally don't weld that small of stuff though. Mainly I use the stuff on my table and after I finish the project it gets wiped down with a thinner rag and if it's during a humid season or like now when the garage goes from cold to warm frequently I'll spray the table down with WD-40 to keep it from rusting.

I'm reading about products I've never heard of for spatter control. I've never heard of using Pam before or used engine oil. I guess that just proves there are just about as many solutions to the problem as there welders out here.

i have used Pam/vegetable oil spray on my table but it tends to be to sticky for my taste lol. i have never used "used" motor oil but i often use new motor oil cut with paint thinner to ease the spreading. once the thinner flashes off it leaves a nice even film on the table that isn't so sticky that it gets all over the metal your welding. you might be a redneck if you use bacon grease and have a hen roosting in you refrigerator/rod oven.

I just bought some stuff from my LWS called Jokich. Its made in Germany and it wasn't all that cheap, bout $45.00 per gallon. I put it in a pump-up insecticide/bleach sprayer from Home Depot. I sprayed a coat over my table yesterday and have built 4 ranch gates on it today, and have not had any spatter issues. I would imagine a gallon should last me at least a year or better. Thanks for all the ideas offered.

Antispatter

I weld 8+ hours a day for a living. I don't use antispatter spray except on high dollar jigs. At the end of the day I use a 60 grit flapper wheel to knock the spatter of my welding tables and smooth off the top. Another option is tacking or clamping a 3/8" plate to the table top and changing it out every so so often

Most times you can minimize spatter by correctly adjusting the wire speed, voltage, and use 92/8 for shielding for GMAW. Also the more welding you can run spray arc the less, if any, spatter you will get. For SMAW set your heat right and spatter is almost non-existent. Aluminum work tables is another option if you can afford it. My 2 cents.

Spatter with GTAW is non-existent.

Try a light coat of primer, I usually have no problem with grounding, and very few bb's will stick.
