HF is not used in stick welding and the syncrowave disables it in stick mode.

You don't do a lot of welding ANYWHERE if you're wondering about HF mode with SMAW

hf for stick welding using a syncro 250

Hi Diesel, It's been a while but I think I've used HF on Al stick to make restarts easier in tight places.Give me a couple of days to get out in the shop and try it and take notes on set-up.By the way I have a 250 Syncro 98 vintage transformer machine. Bill

                    WHY?

Guess I'm in Wheelchair's and wronghand's camp on this question.

Why do you THINK you need HF for SMAW?

I always assumed there was a safety issue involved. Swapping out rods while the HF was on would seem like a pretty hot proposition. Add in phrases like 'tight confines' and I suspect Darwin will be proven right again.

I can say the older welders (in particular the Dialarc HF) didn't have a stick mode per se, just a switch to turn HF on, start-only, or off and another switch for remote contactor and remote level. You could turn these on in any combination you wanted (hey, its your life).

I've used the remote contactor and voltage control a few times (worked a lot better just setting the amps right and using remote as a contactor only.

More modern machines seem to vary the open circuit voltage more so there might be a real need to weld stick in 'stick mode'.

Hi, yes, years back there was a machine out that ran on a gas mixture like a chain saw, gas oil mix, 200 amp, light weight enough to carry around, and yes it ran stick, what it was designed for and impopsed hifreq in the circuit.
Used it for pipe welding in the Fuller plant Caty, Pa. on an air line, tell you what welded like a charm. Smooth.
And I worked with another guy an artist who used the 250HF for portable tig on motor drives, or stick machines, and ran his stick leads thru it welded like a charm.
For those guys that never tried it, you may just like it, smaw never acted so good.
