  • Headaches... literally!

OK... I have a wierd question... Does anybody get headaches and feel tired and icky after running 5p+? I teach welding, and on the days when I am running 5p+ with the kids I have a headache in the evening and feel kind of icky... Other rods dont seem to effect me?

Am I crazy? Just thought I would ask people who run a lot of it... THANKS!

As a "welding teacher," I would hope you've taught "Welding Fume Hazards" to all of your "kids."

Welding produces gases and fumes than can make you sick. Depending on the process, some create greater hazards than others.

Anything that displaces breathable air, has serious or fatal side effects. The welding arc can form ozone and nitrogen oxides. MIG and TIG forms the most ozone, especially when welding aluminum. 100% CO2 shielding gas forms carbon monoxide.

Carbon steels contain more manganese than most others. Prolonged manganese exposure can cause Parkinson's disease. Stainless contains Nickel and Chromium.

TLV's (Threshold Limit Values) for toxic exposures are establish by OSHA, and other regulatory agenicies, and proper safety precautions should be followed, regarding ventilation.

Yeah, it'll give you a headache, because you inhaled toxic fumes all day.

          Yup

I drive a school bus and substitute teach at the local schools. The kids are your biggest cause

Just kidding, the fumes are bad. Doesn't your school have an exhaust system. When I teach in the welding shop, we use the exhaust.

Yep, they give me a headache when they start toe nailing or the x-ray hand starts looking at me and scratching his dead.

This might sound crazy but when we took air quality samples and portable air samples for particulate for a confined weld job, the most ominous result was the ozone levels. Headaches are reported as the number one symptom of repeated long term exposure to ozone.

                        Msds

Read the MSDS that comes with a box of welding rod , that will give you a headache and make you want to reconsider your career or hobby.
