  • Cost of 1-1/2" steel square tube

Does $32 bucks sound about right for a 24' stick of 1-1/2" 16GA steel square tube?

I got this price from a local shop and think its a little high since it matches the prices this site give me:http://www.metalsdepot.com/
Always thought that the online metal sites marked up the prices quite a bit.

I bought 24 foot stick of 1/8 1.5in tube and it was $36.00 so that is probably about right.

            Hey andyman,
That's a good price for 16ga(.065) 1.5sq..... that's $1.54/ft.....quite reasonable. That is what I pay here in SW PA & my local supplier will cut it in half for me free. In the spring I had to get (4) 24' lengths of 16ga & the next day when it came in, the foreman said all they had was 14ga(.083) & he gave it to me for the same price......made my day.

That's A36 with certs flamed out. I will say we don't buy much steel so we don't get any discount at all.

My book says it weighs 1.27# per foot, that equals 30.48 lbs. So that is over $1.00 a foot. I bought some this week for .57 cents a lb. But if I were selling it out of my shop it would be about that, specially for one stick....

wish i could get that. Also the shop i went to stocks metal and I'd be buying tubing that has been sitting outside in Florida weather for who knows how long. I'd get a total of 3 sticks and get them to make one cut on each stick so I can fit it in the car to bring home. said a the total would be like $100. I might end up with 2" square either 16GA or 1/8 depending on the cost.

It's definitely not at cost. They like me, but they don't like me that much. Over the last 3 years I've averaged $9k or $10k per year in sales with them. I'm not sure if that qualifies me as a "big customer" or not. That price is for 12 full 24ft sticks.

I've noticed they have a 3 ring binder of current prices, but they have two sections in the binder. I have noticed where they quote the price from the first section in the binder, but then flip to the other section when I say "I'm buying X pieces (a lot), can you give me a better price". Nowdays I just get jumped straight to the "good" section. They beat anybody's prices, but I'd probably keep using them anyway if they didn't since they're 2 miles away. Shhhh don't tell them that.

Thicker pieces cost around $0.50 per pound. Thin stuff is a little more expensive since it's takes more rolling. Tubing is more expensive since it's bent and welded.
