i'm lookin at buyin a XMT 304 that a guy received as payment for work. this is supposed to be a brand new machine. where we are meeting, i'll have no way to test it. i'll be getting the ser# later tonight.
    my questions are these...

    (1) unless age knocks it out, will the warranty still be good?

    (2) if it has problems, will the warranty be transferable?

    (3) ANY REASON NOT TOO BUY THIS MODEL?

The answers are yes and yes. Might want to keep your 12VS, it will run off your XMT just fine.

The warranty is for 3 years and Miller can tell from the serial number what date the warranty starts and ends. The warranty is on the machine not the person, so it doesn't matter if you're not the original owner and/or don't have a receipt. When the 3 years is up, it's done.

As long as the machine works and the price is good, no reason not to buy it. XMT's are some of the very best mig/stick machines ever made. You won't be disappointed with it.

$1500.00 is a good deal for a near new XMT 304. I am sure you have your reasons for meeting up somewhere that you wont be able to test it, that may the only reason not to buy it! 12 VS runs well as does the 22A. There are lots of Bernard Q300 MIG guns for sale on ebay for around $100.00.

XMT 304 is a good welder!

i'll be meeting him because he's willing to drive over an hour in my direction (through memphis ) which will enable me to make it back to work at the hospital in jackson, ms without missing any time...given there's no road trouble...

sounds like it's gonna work out...he's gonna send me the ser #s in a little while and i'll check 'em out on miller if i can figure out how. that's what'll seal the deal.....

Cruizer or Desert33 might be able to help with the numbers, but if you know this guy, he should let you try it out first. Run it trough all the phases. Those are pretty dependable units, and haven't heard many issues with them, but you never know. It would be a shame to buy it and not all the processes work.

2007 machine. Yeah, no warranty. I bought a new in box 2003 machine in '07 for $730 at auction. Never had a lick of trouble with it.

Price is right. Real right for a low use, clean machine. The feeder is fair priced, I would look for a 60 or 70 series myself. Guns (Bernard Q 3-400, NEW) are on ebay for $100 all day long.

Lots of them out there with low prices on them. I have a 74 DX & love it.

                    However,you already have a 12 RC. You don't need a feeder.

Just plug that baby in & go to town. It's a fine wire feeder & versatile.

Do it. You'll be very happy with it. Stick welds quite nicely too.

www.suttongarten.com had some very reasonably priced process selector switches for them as well. Under $100. Take a look into it.

Let us know how you fare.
So you're telling me...You're not nostalgic? Then, give me another word for it......

                      ebay

I bought a 304 off ebay for 1600 with CA tax and shipping. Turns out to be 1997 and it worked on stick. I haven't tried the rest of it yet.
But that stick is so smooth.

I have an ALT-304, which was the predecessor to the XMT-350. The functions and controls are the same as the XMT-304. I love my machine. Just a heads up though; If you have only welded with transformer machines in the past, inverters weld a little different. It's not a matter of good or bad, just that there is a small learning curve at first. To me this seemed most noticable when stick welding.

Born on August 10th, 2007 so it's still under warranty.

As for warranty issues, no service shop cares on how many owners it's had, as long as the serial# date is still valid.

                            davinci2010...

thanks for the heads up on the different characteristic (?) of the inverter machine. i"ve welded a little bit with a little maxstar 150 -- it was smooth like dragging a rod through butter. is that what you're talking about?

                            cruizer...

thanks for the info. i'm waiting on a call back from the guy right now. if all is well, we'll meet in the morning and make the transaction. i'll prolly buy the 22a feeder if it looks good.

does miller have a service where they can check the machine or load-bank (?) it while it's still warranted? just a thought.......

It is a smooth arc. I seemed to notice a difference mostly in vertical and overhead welds. It's not a bad thing, just required me to change my technique a little. If you've welded with a Maxstar then you know how this one will weld. If there was a way to get A/C output out of one of these, I would not be so tempted to buy a Dynasty.
