  • MM185 won't quit feeding wire.

Well after it sits all winter the wire won't quit feeding. So i unplug the gun and the wire still feeds. I took the cover off and wiggled everything and nothing. So i tapped the top of the motor with the wood handle of a hammer and bingo it quit feeding until i want it to feed. All back to normal now...Bob

Do you recall if the gas valve stayed on and the wire remained 'hot'?

I would guess control relay CR1 normally open contacts stuck closed. Tapping the motor just caused them to release. Could stick again and if so you should replace CR1.

Thanks Duane. No the gas was't still flowing and the wire prob was hot but i didn't let it touch anything grounded. After i ran off about 10' in the drive i undid the tensioner and just let the motor run free. It did this same thing a few years ago after winter but it worked itself out so i never knew what happened...Bob

I agree with Duane. CR1 motor contact is sticking.
The gas valve and contactor are controlled by a different contact.
There is a normally closed contact that is a brake.
I recommend you go a head and replace CR1 It should clear up the problem.
          CR1 does not cost much.

I think you should have just lined up all of your work for the day, pulled the trigger once and started welding, and hope you had enough work to last a whole spool of wire!
