It's getting tough to make rec's on electric tools anymore. The model I bought a year ago may not even be the same as the one you buy today. I've got an old tired bosch i got over twenty years ago. Rock solid, good unit for sure but it's trying to die if I would just let it. I just bought two new makitas a few months ago. One is china, one is japan. Both of those seem like good units too. Problem is, the next unit might come out of vietnam. There's no telling anymore.
I have always purchased Bosch over most other brands, German stuff has always been well made. I have drills, grinders and saws and have never had any problems. My grinder has been used so many times, was using it yesterday and will be using it again today, it does have a switch on problem due to being used so much or a loose contact but I know how to jiggle it on. I am getting a Metabo chop saw next week, again German made, I know many people who swear by Metabo stuff, getting that model because the Bosche handle is not the style I want.
I nip into **** shops from time to time, picked up a Fein sander there for $60 it was brand new and they retail for about $275. Picked up a back up Bosche drill for $50 that was also like new and they retail for $125. Know your prices and you can haggle with them. Home Depot has a special on two Bosche Grinders 4.5 in fo $90 but what do you need two for !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope this helps you.
Cheers,
James.
Got a 7 1/2" Bosch about a year and a half ago. Haven't used it a bunch, usually grab 4 1/2" B&D for most stuff. But the times I have used it, it has been a great tool, never had any problems with it and has plenty of power. The model I got has vibration dampeners in the handles that make it nice.

Bought that package of two before Christmas for the Mrs. I think they are 6amps but all of her work is sheet metal so they do just fine.
Sanding Disc on one
Flap Disc on the other one
Wire wheel on a Craftsman
On sale for 69.00 but they are made in China.

i use 4.5" bosch grinders at work and at home.. as a hobbyist youll probably never burn one up since ive only burned one up in the last year at work, and that was after i spent 10 solid hours grinding parts with 36" of 1/4" weld..
Thanks guys for the input. This particular model i am looking at is a 10 amp,
11, 000 RPM. I think it should be great and last long for the kind of use it will get. I don't think $120 is bad since it is actually an industrial grade grinder.
Thanks again.
I've got some Bosch power tools and as a few other members mentioned each tool is made in a different country. The Bosch tools I do have, I would say 50% are outstanding and 50% are just " acceptable ". If you are buying this for hobbyist use, it will probably last you a good many years.
I have a 4 1/2" and a 9" Bosch grinder, the 4 1/2 is ok, but the 9" is a pain. The cord is SHORT. And so are the prongs on the plug. so with some extention cords, you need to keep meesing with the plug for the stupid thing to work. But the good thing is that it cost as much as a Dewalt or Milwaukee.
Red or yellow will get you a better tool
I have two bosch 4.5" grinders ( the two pack on sale at Home Depot) and they have been great. They probably get 1 hour a week for the last 2 years now. No issues. I bought these after burning up 3 HF grinders.
I also have the 7.25 or 7.5 whatever size it is model and it works great as well. Doesn't get as much use as the other two.
I would recommend bosch or milwalkee or makita before the other name brands.

A contrary opinion, sorry Jeff. I've bought every brand out there, the big reds ones are ok, just heavy. The little red ones, more than a couple, just last fifteen minutes, make smoke, get tossed. Yellow? at least they are easy to find, and cheap, by the time you collect enough of them, you have enough parts given the time, to construct your own grinder. Bosch is the only grinder I buy today, both big and little. Majority of the time, only repairs needed is shortening the already "short" cord, because of a broke or burned wire. Not sure if there is a difference, between commercial outlets and the box stores, but I generally buy thru real dealers.
metabos are WAY overrated.. and i hate that clutch system.. if i was a sissy and scared of grinder kickback, i'd be sitting in front of a computer all day... our shop has its fair share of dewalt and metabos in the grinder pile.. we try to keep our old grinders like a junkyard so we can rob parts like the dewalts tend to have switch problems...
