  • will a 3 phase converter run a welder

i have a chance to buy an older Miller SR-300-32 GTAW and SMAW. It has a water cooled tig torch, one bottle, not sure what yet. will need a regulator. It is a 300 Amp model, 300amps @ 32 volts, 3 settings, A: 5-85 B: 30-285 C:85-440 open circuit volts 72 Weight 832 lb. built around mid 1980's

downloaded the miller manual and am reading next.

Price about $400. How much extra will it take to make it work in a home shop with a 3 phase converter?

I have never dealt with a 3 phase converter, and will start reading and researching info. In the mean time I have seen several good responces about 3 phase, just not one that answers my questions. I have tried searching, and seen every thing but what I am looking for.

Thank you from a Jack of all trades, master of only a few.

Only have a Snapon Muscle mig welder, Gas welder and older lincoln arc. Looking for the TIG for the next step up in working on different items.

I have heard they will run on a phase converter. Check the web sites of Arco phase converters & Temco phase converters & American rotory phase converters. You would want a rotory phase converter.

In order to run it with any real success, you'll need a rotary phase converter easily in the 20 HP range. Big $$ & large input power requirements.

For what single phase machines like the A/BP 330 & Dialarc HF are selling for, save your money & pass on this machine. Besides, this is a DC ONLY machine & will not produce AC weld current.

Keep checking C'sList & fleabay. Lots of deals out there if you do some digging.

        Good luck!

American Rotary is the manufacturer and distributor of the largest selection of phase converters and transformers online! We are the only phase converter company to offer every type of phase converter - static, rotary and digital.

          Ditto on that.

          Some real nice folks there.

            Thank You's for the info

Thanks to those who gave me an insight into using a used, older 3 phase machine with a phase converter, vs paying a bit more and having a new, with parts available, 1 phase machine.

The computer makes it so easy to get insight for others in the field in a very short time frame.

I run some of my welders off a phase converter. I built my phase converter. Its a 15hp one. Lots of info out there on building them and easy to do. Lots cheaper than buying one!
