252 to weld alum

Hi,
I have recently purchased a new 252 and want add a push pull gun setup for alum . Do I have to purchase an xr feeder or is there another way? Also what about cobra's compared to miller xr's?

The Millermatic 252, 350 and 350P are direct-connect for use with Miller push-pull guns. No need to buy a feeder or other controller. The older Millermatic 251 needed a seperate optional controller to run the push-pull guns. I don't know if Miller still sells the controller or not. Anyhow, you don't need it with your 252.

Miller now sells the AlumaPro gooseneck push-pull gun, which is of their own design/manufacture and replaces the Python and XR Edge gooseneck guns they used to use. It can be used with the 252/350/350P machines if you order it with the Power Pin connector setup. It is also used with the XR feeders, provided the feeder has a gas valve installed in it.

The Python is still made by MK Products in California, www.mkproducts.com, as well as the XR-A Edge, which is called the CobraMAX by MK. I have an MK model Python here from 2000 that came with my Cobramatic feeder. Miller called their version of the Python the XR-A Python. Both Miller guns were made by MK, previous to the AlumaPro, which is not an MK product.

The Miller style Python is different in the connections to the machine than the MK and Lincoln style Python (Lincoln still uses the Python, called the Python Plus). The MK and Lincoln versions of the Python and XR-Edge/CobraMAX can be adapted to use with a Miller machine, but the cost is not cheap. The Miller Power Pin connector setup runs a good $300+, plus a new wire conduit at about $100 and a new 10-pin control connector for another $40.

You can use an XR pistol grip style push pull gun on the 252 as well, as long as it has the Power Pin connector setup. You can also use a Spoolmatic gun and replace the spool holder with a wire conduit, which makes it the same gun as the XR and use that for push-pull with the 252. I have an XR15A gun that came with my XR feeder that I converted with a spool cannister and new 10-pin plug to use as a spool gun with my 350P and XMT. It works just like a Spoolmatic 15A/30A spool gun. The conversion can go either way.

Miller also sells a Power Pin connector adaptor setup and I froget if it converts powerpin guns to seperate connectors, or if it converts seperate connector guns to powerpin. Either way, it's rather expensive but alot easier than figuring out all the part numbers and adapting the gun yourself, which is what I did.

What is the exchange rate? I think it was around $1950.00 US. Would 5356
.035 be a good size and alloy to weld 1/8- 3/8" 6061 Alum?

Norm I worked on a couple 252's (now granted i dont see near the amount of machines that cruizer does) but the only problems I ever saw with them was a bad gun (prolly from the machine being dragged around with it) and a bad relay for the fan on demand. They're one of my favorite machines to weld with

Would 5356 .035 be a good size and alloy to weld 1/8- 3/8" 6061 Alum?

Use 4043.

.035 wire for 3/16" and thinner, with .035 or .039 tips.

3/64 (.047) wire for 3/16" and thicker, with 3/64 or .052 tips.
