Me and a guy here at work are having a discussion about aluminum tig welding. We have a high freq box and running a bobcat. The question is do you have to run the bobcat on AC to weld aluminum? I think you do but he says DC- only when running a freq box. Can some of you experts let me know as I have never welded with a high freq unit, just my Dynasty.

As far as an HF-251 box goes, that's why it's a "High Frequency" unit, for AC Tig welding. High Frequency keeps the arc "lit" as it passes through the "zero" point of the sine wave.
AC Tig with an HF unit on a Bobcat produces non-critical welds at best.
You'd be better off, running your Dynasty off the auxillary power of the Bobcat.

[QUOTE=davedarragh;206165]Your Dynasty IS a High Frequency Unit.
Yea, I was aware of that. But that is MY tig welder at my shop. I tried to talk them into buying one at work but they bought a high freq unit instead. Sorry for the confusion.Miller Dialarc 250

Bobcat in AC with HF unit on and you can tig aluminum. Not anything thin though, cause the minimum output of the Bobcat is about 50 amps.
If your company had the opportunity to buy a Dynasty and run it off the generator output of the Bobcat but chose an HF unit to use with the Bobcat's weld output instead, that manager is very uninformed about welding. He needs to step back and listen to the welders instead of making decisions from the top down.Millermatic350P/Python, MillermaticReach/Q300

Thanks for the info guys!
Sheesh...if I worked for a bunch of stupid bozos like that I would make sure I always had another back-up plan.
In this economy mistakes like that will put a company in the poorhouse.
You may want to wait untill they give up and then sub the job out for you at home. Bring them some samples of the same materials welded properly by you.
If they always did crap like that I doubt I would be able to take it myself

Update
I just thought I would give everybody an update on the progress. Well he welded the handrail up with the HF box on the Bobcat DC+. They were moving the handrail off the shop table and onto the forklift and it literally started falling apart. I couldn't hold it back, I almost hit the floor rolling when I saw it. I only wish I had pictures!Miller Dialarc 250
