Can someone tell me about the plate certification test that would be all position with a backing plate? I have taken this test years ago and I'm wondering if I supply the welding rod and what specific rods will be used. I imagine 6010 or 6011 and 7018 to fill and finish, my past tests were administered by the company Q.C.. This test I go to the tech college and the company I work for pays the bill. 350.00

If it's a plate test with a backing bar, it will be 7018 all the way out. If it were an open root test, then it would be 6010 and 7018. The test administrator usually provides the test plates, backing bars and electrodes.Millermatic350P/Python, MillermaticReach/Q300

Yeah 3/4" is kinda odd plate thickness for a cert test. May as well do another 1/4" more and be unlimited qualified. Maybe this test is for a specific purpose and not a general D1.1 test?Millermatic350P/Python, MillermaticReach/Q300

For ASME, 1/2" test thickness is unlimited weld (max the procedure allows)
For ABS and Coast Guard, 3/4" is unlimited thickness (mas the procedure allows)
Depends on the code.
Some requirements on jobs/specialty codes require qualification on actual thickness (no allowance for 2t or unlimited). I have a HSLA procedure that is spec'd this way, as heat input is critical to the application.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like I need to talk to the CWI administering the test to get the details I need. This forum is so awesome.Big Blue 300
