  • Millermatic 200 on aluminum tips please.

Hi everyone. I've done quite a bit of tig welding on aluminum and more than my fair share of mig on steel. What I haven't done much of is migging aluminum. The boss tells me that the old spool gun on the Millermatic 200 is probably shot and he wants to buy a new one. So my FIRST question is: Which spool gun should we buy if , indeed, it IS shot? Secondly, any tips on settings would be grand. I used to use a Miller 250P on aluminum and it was great. Of course, we used 100% Argon for the shielding gas. Also, we are welding 6061 and mating 3/8" to 1/2" material. The 3/8" is a stair tread and is milled so there are 3 tabs on each end of the tread. These tabs fit into holes drilled into 1/2" x 8" 6061 "U" channel. I assume that we will need to pre-heat, yes? Also, what kind of quality should I expect from this machine mated with a new spoolgun? Thanks in advance for even a PARTIAL reply to my diatribe Thanks so much!

Well I'd just fix the gun if indeed it is shot, probably a spoolmatic 1. Problem with these is generally in the control cable.

Wow, that's some thick aluminum. I think you're going to be under powered with only a 200 amp mig and 3/8 to 1/2 inch plate t-joints.

        MM200 is conservatively a 275amp machine @ approx 35% duty cycle..

it is severely underrated... specs nearly identical to the MM252...

        hope this helps

          revlimit,

          I guess I don't understand.

In your signature you show a MM350P with push/pull.

Have you never used that machine for mig welding aluminum?

Is this a personal machine and you don't want to use it on the jobsite?

Have you even had the spoolgun for the MM200 checked out by a competent repair facility (before declaring it shot)? If your boss is sure he wants to buy a replacement spoolgun, it's my understanding (Cruizer would be better informed than I am) that the 30A will work on the MM200, but will require an additional controller.

MM200 is rated the same as the MM252. 60% duty cycle at 200 amps.

Miller used to really underate their machines... [email protected]% is right for both machines... as is much higher at shorter duty cycles.... and from my experience with the antique MM200 that I have... their published specs were very very conservative... they are a very stout machine..

Let's get the facts straight regarding the MM200 and the MM251.

Both machines are rated at 200A output at 60% duty cycle.

The MM200 has a max output of right at 260A.

The MM251 has a max output of just over 300A.

The are NOT the same output machines.

The MM200 was/is a great mig welder which set the standards for the all in one mig welder.

The MM251/MM252 has features not available on the MM200 to include being spoolgun ready, and gun on demand.

As has been mentioned, the MM200 was conservatively rated. By the same token, so is the MM251/252.
