    Consider teaching

Norm, I am sure there are a number of people in your area that would be enthusiastic about learning from someone that has been in the trade for so long. I know that I would prefer learning from someone who "has been there and done that". You have the shop, educational information is easily obtained from the major welding companies, and the students could learn even more by helping to make repairs and with fabrication! I think the local tuition is now about $490 for a 15 week course that meets for 4 hours, only once a week. If you do this, I guarantee that you will also learn from the process. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do! Ray

I will mention, the strawberry farmer has some pretty good points about resumes and self-employment ......

In Canada, and I suppose elsewhere, there is no such thing as a walk away bankrupsy. With a numbered company, the goverment will come after you and what you own. I've had to consolidate a few times.

Ontario is the WORST of the hard hit areas. Unemployment there is rampant. Traffic jams are a thing of the past .....

Ummmm,,,, Mr. Finch,,,, remember,,, I said an accountant, not a banker. If you are paying an accountant, he is WORKING FOR YOU, with your interests up front. ONLY your interests. Should be, anyway. The banker, is working for the bank. If there is a conflict, between your interests and the bank's interests,,,,, well,,,, too bad, Mr. Finch.

Yes, for sure see a bank advisor. An accountant really isn't working for anyones best interest up here (Canada) except for them

My first accountant was good up untill she started doing Cocane, unforturnatly she had signing authority and started writing herself and dummy companys my cheques. Well that was handy to the toon of 15K out the window.

My next accountant, was good up untill she got Cancer, had a successfull operation then decided not to do anymore accounting and simply disappeared.

My final accountant is a chartered firm, good so far, but due to my last accountants mishaps have left me a nice financial $$$ mess to deal with.

                        Sentence

I have been following this and hoping for a good finish, with lots of work for you. Your last sentence made me feel good, "I am not going to quit now". That attitude will get you through most anything. Hang in there things will get better. Last week I was down to one job, now I have what looks like a couple months worth of work. Good luck!

Norm, you never really gave us what overhead, expenses, markets, competition, etc ,you are dealing with.If you have the expense of a shop eliminate it,if you own it.. rent it.If you get more mobile than shop work, get rid of the shop equipment ,upgrade the truck and concentrate on that market. If you have money spent on material..sell it,a guy with his own gear can be a big asset to other companies.Working for someone else can still bring in a cheque, with less headaches of running a company. You never told us how you got in the mess your in..you only told us where your too.Going down fighting is a waste of time..if your kicking a dead horse.I think a welding forum is the wrong place to look for the help you need. You don't know whose on the other end egging you on,most of us are faceless madeup names.Telling you to keep reaching for the stars will have no effect on any of our bottom lines..only yours.Ask your wife/kids/friends what you should do...least you can look them in the face and they know your real situation..

                              Good Luck tomorrow Norm.

I have to say Thank You,
Because since I have been staying close to this thread, I have noticed that your unfortunate situation has made me step back and take a look at my life. I was always saying ( I am always the one to get dumped on and kicked in the side ). I have troubles with my kids mother talking [email protected] on me and troubles with my step kids father wanting full custody, and of course back and hip troubles. BUT Norm, I am not sure why, but your case has made me take a second look at life. I know you are not the only one here that is out of work, BTW guys I wish the best of luck for everyone that needs work. After thinking about it my life is pretty OK for now at least. I am working and paying the bills, for now, knock on wood. Hopefully things take a turn for the better and the economy comes back.
