  • 4043 ONLY in a Miller 252/ spool gun?

    Hey gang:
I puchased a Miller 252 mig with a 30a SPOOL gun a while back. I just got done welding up a set of aluminum ladder jacks. The base material was 6061-t6 and used 5356 spool wire. It turned out great.
But I was just at a big car show in Minneapolis (Back to the 50s) last weekend and Miller had a vendor booth there. I told them about my welding project. They said I should of used 4043 spool wire instead of 5356 for that welding machine because of the internal machine properties...WHAT??
Has anyone heard of this? They said in my TIG it is OK to use 5356, but not recommended in MIG. Or is this guy just blowing smoke?
Any input or comments to this?

    Thanks.

The machine has NOTHING to do with 5356 or 4043.
I do agree with using 4043 on that project though for better color matching.
The 5356 will weld fine but you will get a sooty finish around the weld area from the higher magnesium, manganese and chromium content in the 5356 wire. This may have been what he was trying to say.

Use either one but the 4043 will run cleaner and the 5356 will be a little stronger.

And that is just using those two "common" wires. If you were going for top strenth you could have went with 5183 or 5556 and sacrificed just a fuzz on color match after anodizing. That is if anodizing was gonna happen.
