trailer coupler

hey guys I'm putting together a dump trailer and I got a 2'' coupler for the tongue and had planed on wedding it on but as I was looking at it, it said not to wed onto trailer. I know I have welded 4 or 5 on before and never had a problem before
anyone know why they would say not to wed it on?

Probably a stress thing, better off to bolt it.

thats the only reason i could think of too.
that and it would be alot faster fix if i ever needed to replace it for some reason

I am not aware of the exact process but those hitches are hardened. Any welding on then will act as an annealing process but in an uncontrolled way. This can lead to failure due to many different reasons.

Your better off to just bolt it. It is how they designed it.

sberry: is correct. and the manufacture know that there hitch is crap and will fall apart so they want you the bolt it so it will be easier to replace.

I worked for a trailer company and welded plenty of them on. We never had an issue.

I've welded on a lot of truck frames, too. Except the ones that say "DO NOT WELD."

Every trailer I've ever built I've welded on the hitch coupler. Either used dual shield or ESAB E7018-H4R. Haven't had one break yet. A couple of the trailers have been used and abused pretty hard too.

ya its a small 8x5 made from a boat trailer that had a 6'' I-beam frame and some other scrap steel i had. i haven't got the sheet steel for the sides yet
thats going to take me a week or two for the $$$
