Bullet proof grinders

I have burned up the last milwakee 4 1/2" grinder that I am going to use. I have stripped pinions, burned arbors, you name it. We used to use Bosch the last place I worked, and I don't remember having near the problems. I just got the okay to buy two more, and I want to get something good. Yes, I abuse the **** out them! We use them to brush cup dumpsters for repainting, grinding wheels, cut-offs, etc.

So who makes the super-bad monkey, double HD grinder?

Not when I have to lug the thing around all day. I have a 7", and it kicks my butt after a while. Can you shoot me a model number on Milwakee?

Yes. If you keep frying small grinders, get a big one. I saw this a lot at work, someone working the crap out of a small grinder when they should have had a 9".

Yep, I'm agreeing with Jeff and MD on this one.

I am a big fan of Makita 9005B (5" Light Duty) and 9015DBZ (5" Heavy Duty) grinders, but they will only run a 3" cup brush without melting. 5" and 6" Stringer Bead Wire Wheels - Yes, but cup brushes - no... Too much drag - working the motors to hard.

If you are running the larger cup brushes, OR are running for long periods of time, your best bet is to upsize to larger grinders.

Check this style out as it appears to be a good match for what you're doing and has the back end of the larger grinders, but the head end of a smaller grinder and fairly well balanced to keep the load manageable.

We have been using the 8.5 amp models. I found a 12 amp on Grainger for $175. Kind of pricey unless it lasts longer. Worth a shot. I've had these things get into shirts and jackets with brush cups, and me the guys have walked away with some good marks. I don't want my guys getting torn up by a 9" monster. That may raise some eybrows, but they don't wear loose clothes. We work from ladders a lot, and at the end of a long day, stuff happens.

For the heavy stuff I use a 7" Bosch.

I guarantee it will wear your butt out before you wear it out.

Sounds like you're trying to drive railroad spikes with a 16oz claw hammer.

Either buy the right tool, or go to Harbor Fright and buy a case lot of small ones and throw them away when they expire.

PS. Makita makes a pretty lightweight combo buffer/grinder (2 speed) that has held up pretty well for me over time. It's a 7"er but is considerably lighter than most pure grinders. They're not cheap though. Think mine was around $225.

Check out the Walter line of grinders. They are pricey, but in my experience they are well worth the money. And they have a slip clutch in the head that will allow the brush to stop if you get it jammed up in something (like your clothes) Had a couple that were still going strong after 12 years at my last place of employment!
