Looking at this welder.. need some help..

Found this welder on craigslist Miller Syncrowave 200 Tig welder w/ argon tank for $1200. I called the guy and he said he used it 1 time. I asked how old it was he said about 2 months.. Sounds like a great deal but when I look at his pictures that are not very good and compair them to the picture on this site the controls look different. I won't buy it if he is lieing so can you guys help me out to what year you think it is..
    Here are the pics

      Syncrowave 200

Smuggler: Looks a lot like the one I bought about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Paid $1974 for mine. If you can get a serial # from him, would help. Used once? $1200? If it all works well, go for it! Rock solid machine, great on the stick side too.

If you get it, you'll need a 60 amp breaker for it's outlet.

The price does sound like a pretty good deal to me, however I would also definitely get the S/N. You can easily check the age of the machine through Miller with the S/N.

Oh heck yes by all means get the serial #...if you could catch a thief we would all be happy. And if it's a legitimately good deal then you'll be happy.
But chances are it's already sold.

Thanks guys for all the replys.. he still has it and is going out to his garage to get me the serial numbers and is going to call me back in a few minutes.. It did sound to good to be true as it comes with a owners bottle of argon also. However when I looked at the picture it didn't match the pic I see on the site but if its only 1 1/2 old I still think it would be a good deal right?

However I have never tig welded before so when I go to look at it is there a way to check it out? Like stuff to look for?

I will post the serial numbers in a few minutes..

Lastly I have done some resurch but I just want to double check with you guys.. I want to weld 1/16" -1/8" stainless and aluminum.. From what I read this machine will do it right??

                Let me know your thoughts..
                Thanks again

Never used one so I dont know but maybe someone else would know if these units have an arc counter or hour meter. If it is new as said then the warranty would take care of any issues. I would also ask to see papers of his purchase of the unit.

It will weld those metals and thicknesses just fine. Extended welding at higher amps and you will find the torch can get hot.

Sounds like a VERY GOOD deal! Sadly, some people have found they need to "liquidate" unused items, including tools, to pay their bills. He has advertised it for what he thinks it is worth to him. You can pay him more if you want or try to pay less. But $1200 with a tank is worth it BUT you could get a new Diversion for a little bit more. But I think that if you don't buy it promptly, someone else will...

ONw way to test it when you go (even if you can't TIG) is tu take some 1/8th aluminum and 1/8th stainless.. crank the machine all the way up (ac for aluminum) (DCEN for steel)

Then just crank the machine to the full 200 amps, layinto the pedal and make sure it will blow holes/melt the said metal, and not just a puddle, you shoudl destroy the materials.

If it will do that a few times without breaking the breaker or starting to act weird (and of course if it's not stolen) then i say go for it.

I've tested a few TIGs this way, and it's how i tested my generator to run my Dynasty 200dx.. i plugged in, told the guy if it held up to full on maxed out abuse and didn't flinch i would buy it, and i did.. so far everything has passes this test and all seem to be still in great working order The sync 250 i tried... i put a piece of 1/4 aluminum plate down and canked it to the 310 amps (it's max) and melted a bunch of stuff, my friend bought it, can't use it, so now it's likle my back up and he won't sell it (a-hole LOL j/k...he's a fried so i cll him that to his face all day)

i have shut a few harbor freight weldors down with maxing them out though...luckily they were thermal protected or i'd be screwed buying a friend a new junk welder LOL

also, look closely for nay damage to the cases...screws that look like they've been out, any "hack jobs" in the wiring and things of that nature... as long as it's stuff you can fix and the unit is newer you'll be just fine (actually it dont' have to be frm the last 2 months)..any sync 200 from the past several years have all been good machines as far as 'm concerned..the way to tell really old sync 250's apart (not sure on teh 200 ) is analog guages on oder ones and NO guages on really old ones

                        Just something I heard -

There was a 'ring' of thieves that posted stuff on Craigslist for cheap.

When the buyer showed up at the meeting place with cash he got mugged.

I'm just saying be careful - if it's too good to be true ........?
