  • Not impressed with elite helmet

I just bought a used elite helmet off ebay and i'm not very impressed with it. ITs nice to have the bigger viewing area put i thought it would be more clear then my cheap HF hood. I tried both right after each other and i can see no difference and at least my HF hood has auto on with my elite one doesnt' because its 3yrs old.

Some folks have stated that they seem to have a Clearer view through better/ $$ Hoods.

I have a HF and an Optrel Satellite which look the same to me but I bought the Optrel for the options it offers as well as the better head gear.

What i meant about the clearer view was ppl where saying that the higher priced helmets had a better crisper view. I don't see the difference, the bigger window is a lot nicer and so is the head gear but i don't think its worth the extra money over the hf hood, but thats just my opinion.

            Yes & No

Yes because you can- no problem.

No because if you have a Fixed shade hood with a 13 shade in it, it may be too dark for Low amperage Tig welding- and really any low amperage welding.

Yes- You can just change out the Shade and use the same hood.

.... and thus the benefit of a variable Shade Hood.

              13!!!! THIRTEEEEEN????
Man oh man, thats a lot of darkness!!!!
I'm certain I could not make a decent weld with a 13 lens even at 847 amps or so.
You're making that up, unless it comes with the BAF option.
              But that's just me.

Making it up I suppose but I see Fixed Shades listed up to #14 ??

If #13 is too dark for 847 amps why does the Elite and others go from 9-13?

Humor is a good thing dude. Don't fight it. Let it flow

I've got several brand new, in the package, 1980's vintage, Lincoln Supervisibility #14's, I've been totin em around since about 1989.

I didn't say 13 was too dark for 847 amps. I said 13 was too dark for ME at 847 amps. Big difference. What i usta see clear thru a 11, now calls for a 9.
                  I wouldn't use a 14 till around 972 or maybe 981 amps.

                  Your mileage may vary.

My last day of school (work) was Friday, I'm on summer vacation and therefore don't have to answer questions. Unless you're with the FBI or ICE.

I was only joshin you man, use whatever shade you like. You knew that. Over and out.

                        How dark should it be

I'm a noob to welding but learning. I bought a cheap princess auto (US equivalent to Harbour Freight I believe) Auto dark helmet. 9-13 shade. I seem to have to crank it to 13 to get enough darkness out of it, even then it still seems to bright. I'm using flux core, don't know if that matters. With the helmet cranked I can see the arc, but not so much the puddle. I tried my prescription sunglasses underneath and turned it to 9. I can see the puddle perfect and my eyes are not getting fatigued.

Here's the question - When your helmet darkens and you look at 2 bulb florescent fixture from 2 feet away - how much do you see? Dim shapes? the full bulb and fixture?

If someone could gauge it for it me would be very helpful. If not I'll take a video holding the camera behind the mask and behind the mask with my glasses. Not sure how it will work out though as the camera has a eyris that will close up.

                          what shade do you use?

                          Hi guys
I have two hoods (1)huntsman fixed#8 and speedglas 9000x new style and I use them for different applications and how I feel when welding.

Also you can get a chart from these links to see what the specs are for lens shades

                            No magic here

                            how about a basic thoght?

Too bright? use a darker shade.
Can't see? use a lighter shade.

I never use darker than 10
