Aluminum Spool Gun

Hi,

I have recently joined the welding world with a Millermatic 172. I am looking to start welding aluminum. Does anyone know what model spoolgun and adapter I would need?

Don't know da kine 172, brah. 175 maybe? For a 175, Miller recommends the SGA 100 controller paired with the Spoolmate 3035. The total cost is pricey - around $600 total.

For that price I'ld sell it and get a new MM180 w/ the SG100 for $926.77 fron IOC on ebay. $600 is way to much for that set up. Just my opinion if you plan on welding Al. I used that set up to make my welding cart. Worked great on 1/8" Al.

Ed,

I knew I had heard that number, but I couldn't find it in the owner's manual list. If you read the manual (I'm having trouble with Firefox and Adobe. Can't get the browser to work with it.), will it do the trick with an adapter and a 3035?

Hank I've got a 172. The only way I would put a spool gun on it would be to find the controller used for so cheap a price people would say I stole it. Upgrade is the way to go.

the spoolmate 100 and the 300409 kit will work
you will have to do some rewiring as the plugs on the switch will not match up with your drive motor plugs
