Need to pull the pan on my truck

Hey guys,
I need to pull the pan on my 03 cummins and was wondering if any of you guys have pulled the pan on a Cummins while she was still between the rails. The truck has a 6speed.She swallowed a valve and destroyed one of the pistons. This looks like it could be kinda fun gettin the pan down. Maybe I should just cut the cross member...

I got the pan off. It wasn't as hard as I thought. I've enclosed some pics of the carnage.
Man I guess when the pyro hits 1350 you really should get out of the throttle! I don't think these thing were made to run upto 1800+!!!

Carnage....that pretty much nailed it.

It looks like the combustion chamber and other valves fared OK. How is that possible?

Did the cylinder survive?

Hey guys,
The other cyls. did fare well. The 03's are known for them dropping valve seats so this kind of damage is not unusual. The cyl. is fine so a new updated head, a piston, rings a couple push rods,bearing and a upper and lower gasket set she should be up and running great. Oh yea the head of the valve wasn't in the cylinyder so it had to pass through my new turbo. I guess it's time for a new one...

Sure is nice to be able to work on something without a week worht of taking stuff off.

Should have a Ford..They had to dismantle mine to get the engine out to be able to pull the pan.

I didn' think anything ever happened to the Cummins???? At least thats what the dodge boys say..

Heres a picture of a Dura-max in a C5500. Blown headgasket. Had to jack up driver side of cab to head off. What a pain. New head bolts and various gaskets $700+. We have about 40 or so of these in the fleet and this is the first we've had to do engine work, except for injectors. They all have their issues Thats why mechanic pay is going up.

Iron head,
A couple of weeks ago I ripped all the teeth off of 6th gear. I had about 12,000lbs of steel plates on my trailer and a guy in a dirty max blew some smoke at me so I had to return the favor in a big way. As I went by the guy I was hitting over 1800 degs. I heard a pop and let out of her but when I put the power back to her she lost most of the teeth. If ya check out some of my last post you'll see that carnage. Well I don't think that run helped the engine. I have had a bunch of high temp runs but usually there short lived. Dyno runs ect... I need to put on my bigger turbo so I can cool things down a bit.
J Hall, I am going to 1 hole it.The other cylinders are as close to perfect as can be. Heck the cross hatches are still visable in the cylinders. I think everything will be ok.

Hey guys,
Ironhead yep she's in a big way! I have a TST mp 37 stacked with a Smarty programmer. I also have Formula 1 Stage 2 injectors. (100 hp) I have a whistler intake new turbo (not big enough) and she has a 5" straight pipe. The truck is a hoot to drive. It's the 1st truck that I have owned that you can be going down the road at 55mph in high gear and stand on the throttle and break all 4 - 35x12.50 loose.

Without a doubt the Cummins 5.9 is the best built and longest lasting Diesel engine offered in a pick up. But hey if ya try hard enough anything can be broke!
