Seat Belts

I am currently looking for some seatbelts. They are to go in my Freshly Built Dune Buggy. I was planning on a 5 pt. harness. The buggy is registered and street legal (titled as a VW), so I want the seat belts to be street legal.

My questions are: What does SFI 16.1 mean, and is that street legal? Anybody know about the RCI Platinum series, I was considering them.

I won't be going more than 70 miles an hour, if that changes any minds.

Seat Belts

SFI is the saftey certification for race sanctioning bodies Indy, GP, Formula One, etc.. To be legal on the street, your seat belts need to be DOT approved. There are or one or two companies that make race certified belts that are also DOT approved. Might do a Goggle search under DOT approved seat belts.

Sorry, but your incorrect. SFI, FIA, or NHRA specifications do not comply with DOT approval. If the seat belt tag does not say "DOT" on the tag, they are not legal for the street according the the Department of Transportation. It doesn't matter that the race belts are much stronger, or are made of superior materials. It has to do with the certification process and the life span of the part. SFI certified parts have a defined life span, as in seat belts, no more than 5 years from the date of manufacture, to as little as 2 years, depending on the sanctioning body rules, and the manufactures specifications.

SFI 16.1 is not legal for street use in California, now that doesn't mean that a CHP officer will site you for using them, but if they're looking for something to ding you for, they just got you. Then you have to buy new "DOT" seat belts, and pay a "Fix It Ticket". Your money, take your chances.

The RCI Platinum are not DOT by the way.

I have only head one dot harness before. but I drive with my crows on my offroad truck and my buddys to. Well I dont drive it on the street anymore. but never head of cop saying anything yet
