GME Job Fair Set for April 28

    4/9/2007

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MPC is finalizing plans for a job fair for its Garyville Major Expansion (GME) project on Saturday, April 28, 2007.

The GME Job Fair will take place at the St. John Community Center, 2900 Highway 51 in LaPlace, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. As one of the largest private sector construction projects underway in the U.S., the GME will create hundreds of job opportunities with all of the construction companies on the project.

“We are sponsoring this job fair to provide the residents of St. John Parish and the River Parish region an opportunity to be part of this major refinery expansion project,” said Rich Bedell, manager of the Garyville refinery.

A variety of skills will be required for the jobs associated with Marathon’s estimated $3.2 billion expansion of its Garyville refinery. Marathon and contractors hired for the project will participate in the job fair and will be recruiting for a variety of positions:

    Carpenters and carpenter helpers

    Cement workers and finishers

    Crane operators

    Direct and hydraulic equipment operators

    Engineers

Pipe fitters and pipe fitter helpers

    Rod busters

    Welders

    General laborers

Electrical, instrumental, mechanical, process and lab technicians

    Ironworkers

    Boilermakers

    Millwrights

Supervisors and foremen for all crafts

Recruiters representing Marathon, Cajun Constructors, Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, Excel, Fluor Corporation, Industrial Specialty Contractors, L.L.C., James Construction Group LLC, Performance Contractors, Shaw Stone & Webster, Turner Industries Group, LLC and U.S. Trades will be on hand to discuss positions available with job seekers.

Representatives from Associated Builders & Contractors, Gulf Coast Workforce Development Initiative, Louisiana Technical College, National Center for Construction Education & Research and St. John Career Solutions will be represented at the event to provide information about education programs and job training needed for the available openings.

A shuttle bus service will be provided for those needing transportation to the event between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shuttle bus will pick up passengers at the Garyville Magnet School, 240 Highway 54, Garyville, on the half hour, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The shuttle bus will also make a stop at East St. John High School, #1 Wildcat Drive, Reserve, at 45 minutes past the hour, beginning at 8:45 a.m.

    I wish em luck.....
I'm over on the west side of the state and work as Project Mgr. for a local engineering firm. There is a SEVERE shortage of craftsmen of all disciplines in the state right now. Its been that way ever since we got pounded by the one/two punch of Rita and Katrina. One outfit brought in over 600 foreign weldors for one of their expansions. Local refineries have given $4+/hr raises to their blue collar workers just to keep em from leaving for the building trades that pay higher. Other outfits bring in BUS loads of Mexicans every week to do laborer, sheetmetal and carpenter work.
There is a local pipe fab shop that was doing a job for one of my projects and they found out that I could weld and do it on the side have called me at least a dozen times to come to work. IF they keep upping the rate, I may take em up on it....
On this side of the state, we have over $13 Billion in expansion taking place over the next 3-4 years. IF we include east Texas golden triangle as part of that area, that number jumps to $84 Billion.
Lots of work...no workers. Anyone around here thats not working its because they don't WANT to.
